Note: this position may be filled as an Engineer III or one level up as a Senior Engineer dependent upon the selected candidate's experience.

This position performs engineering conceptual design (relay one-lines), studies, calculations, and settings development for Transmission, Sub-Transmission, and Distribution protection systems ranging from 4.16kV- 525kV systems. Primary job responsibilities will be focused on the application of new protective relaying for existing infrastructure or new transmission system capital investments as well as modification of legacy protection systems for Transmission capital or O&M support. Additional responsibilities include providing protective relay settings support and troubleshooting for protection systems on a wide variety of applications (transmission line protection, transformer protection, bus protection, capacitor protection, etc.).

Engineer III

The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.

Senior Engineer

The Senior Engineer manages work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. The Senior Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. Employees in the Senior Engineer position are fully competent in the use of concepts and procedures. The Senior Engineer identifies problems, develops solutions and takes action to resolve.

Responsibilities - General

* Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.
* Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.
* Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
* Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
* Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
* Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
* Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally

Basic Requirements - Engineer III

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE).

  • A Master's degree in engineering can be considered in lieu of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree.

  • Minimum 4 years of engineering experience.

Basic Requirements - Senior Engineer

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE).

  • A Master's degree in engineering can be considered in lieu of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree.

  • Minimum 5 years of engineering experience with a PE

  • Minimum 6 years of engineering experience without a PE

Skills and Experience

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Familiarity with Aspen Relay Database, Aspen OneLiner, CymTCC, SEL-5010, SEL-5030 AcSELerator software.

  • Understanding and experience with NERC Compliance Standards including but not limited to: PRC-006, PRC-023, PRC-025, PRC-026, PRC-027, CIP-010, CIP-002.

  • Familiarity with electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor-based relaying.

  • Familiarity with relay protection schemes and relay logic for a variety of applications (Transmission Line, Bus, Transformer, Breaker Failure, Capacitors, Etc.)
